Pediatric Dental Cleanings & Regular Check-ups

Visiting your doctor for pediatric dental cleanings and regular check-ups can help identify any dental issues before they worsen. Dental cleaning procedures remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar from teeth and gums and help maintain optimal oral health in children.

At Pine Desert Dental, Dr. Sunistch offers comprehensive pediatric dental care for your children.

First Dental Appointment for Children

As the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends, a child’s first dental appointment should happen when the first tooth appears or no later than their first birthday. The Pine Desert Dental team will ensure your child’s first visit is comfortable and stress-free.

Regular Dental Check-Ups for Children

Children should have a regular check-up every six months to ensure early detection of any dental issues. Some of the benefits of routine check-ups for your children include:

What to Expect At Your Children’s Dental Check-Up

During your appointment, Dr. Sunitsch will examine your mouth, teeth, gums, and jaw to identify potential problems or decay.

He will also ask about dietary habits that could help to track down and diagnose dental issues. Additionally, reviewing oral mucosa will help to rule out anything concerning dental conditions.

A bite assessment (checking for imbalances in your children’s bite), fluoride treatment, and any necessary x-rays can also be performed during this visit.

What to Expect At Your Children’s Dental Cleaning

Professional dental cleaning for your child ensures optimal oral health and prevents further dental decay.

During a dental cleaning, Dr. Sunistch’s team will scale your child’s teeth to remove plaque and tartar and polish them using a special paste. This procedure is painless and usually takes between 30 minutes to an hour.

Pine Desert Dental’s team always ensures their youngest patients are comfortable and calm before starting any treatment.

Ensuring Good Oral Hygiene

Proper dental hygiene consists of brushing teeth, gums, and tongue twice daily and flossing daily. Dr. Sunistch recommends avoiding sugary drinks (juice, milk, etc.) in baby bottles to avoid dental decay in children.

Also, rinsing and cleaning your child or baby’s mouth after a bottle prevents plaque formation. Once your baby’s teeth appear, brush them gently with a child-sized toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste.

As soon as your baby has two teeth that can touch, you should begin cleaning between their teeth daily with floss. Ensure your children always brush their teeth after eating and before bed. Keeping good oral hygiene habits can help prevent many dental issues in your children.
