Root Canals

A root canal (or endodontic) treatment is a dental procedure that aims to treat infection and inflammation in the tooth's pulp to prevent its extraction. Patients who undergo a root canal usually experience pain relief soon after the procedure is over.

If you suspect a tooth infection and would like a consultation for a root canal, contact the Pine Desert Dental team to explore our endodontic services.

When Is a Root Canal Needed

Root canals are performed when the nerves and soft tissue or pulp of the tooth become infected by bacteria. Removing the decayed tissue of your tooth will help maintain its structure and prevent its loss.

Some of the causes of a tooth pulp infection include:

How to Know If You Need a Root Canal

You may need root canal treatment if you have the following:

  • Teeth sensitivity, particularly to hot and cold sensations
  • Severe pain while chewing or biting
  • Pimples on the gums
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Deep decay or darkening of the gums

During your dental consultation, Dr. Sunitsch will review your symptoms to identify the best treatment option for you.

Root Canal Dental Procedure

Before the Procedure

During your consultation, Dr. Sunitsch will discuss the endodontic treatments that can help your condition. Once your medical history and condition are reviewed, he will proceed to check your symptoms and oral state.

X-rays may be taken to identify the decayed tooth pulp. If your dentist determines that a root canal is an ideal treatment for you, he’ll schedule your next appointment.

During the Procedure

During a root canal procedure, Dr. Sunitsch will proceed to remove the inflamed or infected pulp. Once the area has been carefully cleaned and disinfected, he will fill and seal the tooth with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. The tooth is then restored with a crown or filling for protection.

Pain After a Root Canal

Most patients experience relief from the discomfort caused by inflammation and infection as soon as their treatment is over. You may have mild to moderate discomfort for a few days after the procedure. Most patients experience this discomfort while chewing on the treated tooth.

In that case, we recommend taking over-the-counter pain medication to help ease any pain or swelling.

Root canals are performed under local anesthesia. However, if you’d like to be completely comfortable during your procedure, our team can offer you the sedation treatments available.

Recovering from a Root Canal

The numbness caused by anesthesia lasts from 2-4 hours. We recommend not chewing anything after treatment until the effects have faded to prevent injuries. Patients usually resume their normal eating routines a couple of days after a root canal.
