Sedation dentistry helps patients who wish to remain calm and relaxed during dental procedures. Our available options are ideal for people who want to reduce the stress caused by their treatments but do not want to be completely unconscious.
Sedation dentistry options that we offer include nitrous oxide and oral anxiolytics. Nitrous oxide is available to pediatric patients.
If you will have a dental procedure soon and wish to remain comfortable during the treatment, the Pine Desert Dental team has multiple sedation dentistry options available.
Nitrous Oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a sedation method offered to patients, regardless of age, who have anxiety during dental appointments or low pain tolerance.
Contrary to its name, laughing gas does not really make you laugh. It works to slow down your nervous system, making you feel more relaxed and less inhibited during your dental procedure.
The gas is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a mask. Once you breathe in, the effects will settle in almost immediately. You will feel slightly light-headed and relaxed since the sedative effects of nitrous oxide are not intense and do not cause unconsciousness or amnesia (memory loss).
Nitrous oxide or laughing gas is recommended for patients who:
- Experience dental anxiety
- Want to increase their tolerance during longer appointments
- Have special healthcare needs
- Have a gag reflex that could interfere with the treatment
Oral Anxiolytics involve a pill-form sedation method offered to patients who have anxiety or low pain tolerance during dental appointments. The pill is usually ingested an hour before the treatment, and its effects can last up to 24 hours after the procedure.
Different drugs are used for oral anxiolytics, and their usage will depend on your medical history and conditions. With oral anxiolytics, you’ll remain awake during your procedure but will become less aware and probably won’t remember what happened until the effects have faded.
It is ideal for patients who undergo lengthy procedures and want to reduce the effects that could arise during the treatment.
